SOCNESS

SOCNESS

One of our goals in last summers at sea work was to use a multi-frequency sonar to chart and identify zooplankton that are associated with major plankton blooms. To do this we commissioned manufacture of a very sophisticated sonar that was compact and autonomous. We attached it to our MOCNESS multinet plankton sampling device. It worked liked a charm. Our forward looking multi-frequnecy sonar has provided us with sonar data which we are fingerprinting to our MOCNESS collections. This will revolutionize ocean plankton studies, especially for zooplankton.

Our guidance for this work came from a dear friend and scientist at the University of Sapin. He’s the top expert in this field and has been studying zooplankton in plankton blooms for most of his life. You can watch Santiago on this YouTube link.
