A Rutter For The Legal Ocean

A Rutter For The Legal Ocean

A rutter is a mariner’s handbook of written sailing directions. Before the advent of nautical charts, rutters were the primary store of information for maritime navigation. They very importantly contained information about unexpected perils such as sirens, brigands, pirates, and seasons of stormy weather.

Every ocean has peculiarities, the Pacific is often very passive, I once motored a sailboat for a week in the middle of the Pacific where the sea was so calm that it looked like a mirror from horizon to horizon. The Southern Ocean starts in a region south of the “roaring forties” known as the “fearsome fifties”, and then if you dare into the “screaming sixties”.

The Legal Ocean is the most unpredictable of all as we have seen. It can one moment be peaceful and calm and the next be a ruthless typhoon. It is filled with Sirens which are female sea creatures described variously in ancient literature. But one thing is always certain, you will experience their terrible malevolence should one approach you. We will shortly be providing our “sailing directions” to those of you who dare set sail on the dangerous Legal Ocean.
